Lamborghini Diablo

In June, 1985 of Automobili Lamborghini decided that it is time to start to think of replacement for legendary Countach. Since that moment, the company five more years of development were required to let out the new supercar - Diablo. The novelty was presented to public on January 21, 1990, in Monte-Carlo, and subsequently became one of the most recognizable supercars on a planet.

The main objective in development of Diablo was simple - the maximum speed of the new supercar should be not less than 315 km/h. At design of a body of Lamborghini contacted Marcello Gandini who also worked over design of Miura and Countach, but its primary project passed some changes: at first under its management, and later in the center of design of Chrysler in Detroit.

Chrysler Automobili Lamborghini since 1987 owned, having got the company in the heat of development of the project 132. Americans changed design to more practical, but at the same time less aggressive. Nevertheless, the general style was still rather close to the original project so Marcello Gandini without reflecting put on the car the autograph.

Despite intervention of Chrysler, Diablo remained true Lamborghini - low, wide and very fast. Its maximum speed was established at level of 325 km/h, and on a test track of Nardo, pilot Sandro Munari managed to reach 340 km/h. For achievement of these results, Diablo received modified V12 with four valves on the cylinder, but now with volume in 5,7 liters and recently developed multipoint system of injection of fuel. The engine gave out quite respectable 492 h.p., sending a new Lamborghini in the upper echelon of the market supercars, except the limited edition model Bugatti and Jaguar XJ-220. models limited in the circulation.

The interior also was completely processed, in what the staff of the Chrysler design center again took a hand. Steel sitting completely adjustable, and even the option of the order of adjustment of seats under the client was available. The dashboard represented one big block, and could be adjusted on height together with a steering wheel. Inside the salon was trimmed by the best Italian skin of handwork and was equipped high-power with a stereo Alpine system with the cassette tape recorder or the CD player. Also options of installation of a CD changer and a subwoofer were available. Landing in the car became much more convenient, than in Countach - doors opened more widely, and you could slip literally in the car, without touching a roof or a door. Additional options included an exclusive set of luggage ($2600), and unique hours of Breguet ($10 500).

Clients received the first models of new Lamborghini in June, 1990, exactly in five years after project start, and Diablo became amazing success for the company both in the market, and in numerous reviews and test drives. Certainly, there were also shortcomings: a heavy wheel and the heavy coupling, two problems which always were present at the Lamborghini models. But the following model, Diablo VT, was already equipped with the amplifier of a wheel and the modernized coupling that made Diablo more convenient in the address. More compact dashboard and forward air inlets of Diablo VT also were used on Diablo 2WD.

In total 2903 Diablo of various updatings were let out, and this model most strongly associates with the name Lamborghini at the majority of autoenthusiasts worldwide.
