Muscle cars

So it developed, what not all in our country know true value of the phrase "muscle car". The vast majority of fans and even experts include in the list of dream of such cars at least one reincarnation of Corvette and Shelby Cobra. Out of any doubt all above-mentioned cars are madly attractive and can be easily carried to the category of supercars. But here muscle car definition by it doesn't approach.

So, at the real muscle car surely are present back sitting, well, at least, there is a place for them (often them I remove for simplification of weight of a car). Judge: the main target audience of such cars – the young men, looking for attention of women. Lack of a back sofa in that case – an inexcusable mistake.

Muscle cars appeared thanks to a clever advertizing move during post-war economic boom. Automakers understood that having given small forces to development of sports projects, they can create at the same time an agiotage round standard models and involve promptly growing audience of young buyers.

Exactly the era of muscle cars so began. Cars, which could eclipse glory of other supercars but not bypass on sales standard serial models on the basis of which they were created. However it to expect it was silly. The cars relating to this class, became the real American dream, the actual person of the whole continent. Sonorous, heavy, embodying brutal power the chopped forms, it strikingly differed from smooth and optekayemy Jaguars and Ferrari. Their mission - to be torn forward on a straight line to the treasured finishing line, instead of to slide on the routes Le Mans. Huge plus of muscle car was that at the price they were available to the average inhabitant. Democratization of the car was one more American innovation of those times - Henry Ford's dream, arisen the little after the invention of the car. Though and Cobra - the American cars, but their smooth lines, double salons and high cost do to Corvette them by successors of the European culture, instead of the American dream.

The era of muscle cars lasted approximately from 1960 to 1971, and the list of cars presented below we tried to tell you about the most outstanding representatives of the Golden Age of it such as cars.

1971 Dodge Charger R/T

Motor: V8 — 375-415 horsepowers (depending on updating). Maximum speed: 210 km/h. Dispersal of 0-100 km/h: 5,7-5,9 seconds.

In 1971 of Charger received a new body, so-called «Coke bottle styling» — because of the form reminding a bottle of Coca. In a production line of Dodge, an abbreviation of R/T means «Road and Track» (the road and a track), it designated models with 375-strong motors «440 Magnum». But for additional money, optionally it was possible to order the car with more powerful, 415-strong engine «426 HEMI». On assurance of eyewitnesses, with such motor at rather strongly loaded back axis and big width of back tires of Charger it was possible to lift on back wheels at start «from two pedals».

1969 Pontiac GTO JUDGE

Motor: V8 — 370 h.p. Maximum speed: 201 km/h Dispersal of 0-100 km/h for 5,9 seconds.

The Judge — the car received the name thanks to the fallen in love hero judge from the satirical telecast "Laugh in" popular in the late sixties. The advertizing slogan said: «The Judge can be bought» («The judge can be bought») — it caused a number of protests, thus didn't affect in any way statistics of sales. This updating the 370-strong engine distinguished from usual GTO with Ram Air III system, a rear wing on a trunk lid, two-colored strips on sidewalls bodies and stickers with the name The Judge on all case.

1971 Trans Am 455 HO

The last from the great. Pontiac presented 455 HO in 1971 when producers everywhere reduced capacity of motors, trying to pass to new environmental standards. Extent of compression and engine capacity of 455 HO were below than if the engine was made a year earlier. Thus the torque managed to be lifted to impressive 678 Nanometers. This model nevertheless managed to be compared to brutal 6.5-liter Ram Air IV, (release is stopped year before). Easier Pontiac (-100 kg) even managed to surpass legendary Ram on a straight line. Unfortunately, 455 HO it was let out in number of only 88 copies. Thus this car is one of the most rare, relating to that era.

1969 429 Boss

In 1969, having assembled the new engine for NASCAR, Ford established the  7-liter unit under Mustang Fastback cowl. The impressive size of the motor demanded from engineers of a fair share of the imagination therefore, for example, the accumulator appeared in a luggage carrier. The huge engine, which official capacity it was fixed on a mark of 500 h.p., on official measurements gave out result in 375 h.p. Thanks to the surprising motor and super - aggressively to design, 429 BOSS could become the greatest muscle car of all times, don't commit Ford a critical mistake in early production of the car. The first some hundreds from 858 cars collected in 1969 received the wrong springs of valves stopping at 4500 revolutions per minute, without reaching to 6000. It took away the top quarter of a range of capacity from the engine and let's to the car march in step with competitors from Chevrolet, Dodge and Plymouth. Even after the mistake was corrected BOSS indicators on a straight line were unsatisfactory (to be fair, the car was created for ring races, instead of racing drags) and, having sold less than 500 cars, in 1970 of Ford decided to refuse production of the car.

1970 Chevelle SS LS6

In attempt to recover sale, GM, at last, refused the voluntary ban on production and installation
of motors in volume 6.5 l are higher. on cars in 1970. The drink of freedom generated some of the most eminent muscle car of all times and the people: Oldsmobile W-30 4-4-2, Buick GSX, and Chevrolet Chevelle SS, with the LS-6 engine, probably most explosive of all company. Judge: 7.4 l., 450 h.p. and 678 Nanometers of a torque allowed SS to pass mile quarters in 13,4 seconds. To some extent strategy of sales of GM worked: they sold more than 450 000 Chevelle of that of the year about 1 % from which were equipped with LS-6. Chevy sent Chevelle in resignation in 1977 after thirteen years of process production.

1970 Buick GSX

Perhaps, the greatest and most underestimated muscle cars from Buick. GSX was made in 1970 in attempt to be connected to the profitable youth market on which the company had no competitive model. The car was equipped with the 7.4-liter engine in capacity in 360 h.p. (official measurement) with a torque in 691 Nanometer. The motor in many respects surpassed better known LS-6 Chevelle, making slightly more torque on low turns, and weighing on 70кг less. Unfortunately, Buick entered the muscle cars market too late. By 1970 of sale decreased for all producers, and before input of restrictions on capacity there was less than a year.
